Here it is - May 1st. After a record breaking early season, the asparagus got off to a slow start. We've been picking regularly, but just not lots. We had a few cold nights, no rain, a couple warm days, but more frost at night. Weird year for those tasty little green stalks! We will have asparagus until June 1st, and if you'd like some, come to the Bounty of the Barrens Farmer's Market on the square in Glasgow, KY any Saturday from 8 - 12 - OR call us - OR email us! We should have some on hand.
If you are in the Louisville, KY area, go to the Root Cellar in Old Town and talk to Ron Smith! we try to ship regularly to him, and now that the season is underway - we should be able to provide a more regular schedule for him. I know he'd like that!
There's plenty of ammo for the rifle and my trustly hand gun. I am a pistol packing mama when I head out to the blueberry bushes! No wild turkey will survive my attack! Last year, the turkeys ate every blueberry on every bush - this year, we are being very vigilant! Turkey for supper! This is the first year that the asparagus and the blueberries will overlap for picking. Will keep us busy trying to keep up with both! Another 2 weeks and the blueberries should be ready.
We're getting lots of rain and it's coming down now, as I type this. A good soaking will increase the asparagus and make the fruit plump and sweet! You need to see my orchard! John's been taking care of the orchard and I've been mowing and mulching. I just can't wait for my plums to ripen - lots of them on my trees too! The fruit trees are just covered!
If you come to visit - bring some working clothes!!! The garden is looking fabulous - but always needs some weeding! The brocoli plants are doing great after we stuck the little baskets around them to get the pesky rabbits out! We have lettuce, 3 types, radishes and a few peas. This rain we're getting will help everything!
Thanks to all our friends, families and our customers for making 2011 such a blessing! We are baking and keeping busy with all the farm stuff, the bakery stuff and the driving stuff! A big thank you to all the help we've had over the years and big hugs to the people we have helping us now. We just couldn't do it without you!
A LITTLE HISTORY....
John and I moved onto our property just about 10 years ago and we've gotten alot accomplished in that time. We planted a bunch of blueberry bushes and hundreds of asparagus seeds and crowns! Now, we're still putting blueberry bushes in the ground and taking cuttings and raising more!! You certainly are what you eat and our goal is to become as sustainable as we could possibly be. We raise beef, turkey & chicken and we love to share our knowledge! We hope that people could learn from our mistakes and we are interested in teaching you what we know!
Self sustainability is our goal and we work towards that every day we're here. It's rewarding and enlightening and fulfilling and the path we've chosen. However, we always have time to set a spell and would welcome a visit! As you travel up or down Hwy 68 in Metcalfe County, Kentucky - feel free to stop in! We have farm fresh eggs, homemade bread in the freezer and will be happy to rustle up a pot of coffee and visit a bit!
Come visit us at Tubbs' Farmstead & Bakery! Coffee's on!
